East Harbor State Park

Our trip on Wednesday was uneventful and smooth…just like it should be! Beautiful day to travel – dry, clear, with comfortable temperatures! We generally try to get gas when the tank is about half full (mostly because the price tag is a little less frightening), and we did the math to calculate that we were getting 11.4 miles per gallon. Not bad considering we were expecting about 10 MPG. And much better than what my uncle has always said about motorhomes – “they get about 5 gallons to the mile!”

We arrived at East Harbor State Park around 4:15pm. The park is on a peninsula that stretches into Lake Erie, just west of Sandusky, OH. Our campsite presented a new challenge – Mark had to back RoVer into it (our previous campsites were ‘pull-through’). We decided to try using our cell phones to communicate since he can’t really hear me if I’m behind the RV directing him…and he can’t always see me, either. The phone connection kept cutting out, but we still managed to get RoVer in position relatively quickly. And, best of all…no leveling required. We thought we’d have to raise the front tires a little, but Mark realized if he backed up a little more, the rear tires would be lower and sure enough, that did the trick! Yay! The positioning of the water, electric, and sewer hookups is a little odd at this site; instead of everything being right next to each other, the sewer is several feet away from the other hookups, so Mark had to measure and make sure the hose would be able to reach the sewer okay. Just barely!

We really like our campsite. It’s probably not a popular one because it’s at the end, near the road, but we have lots of grass around us. It might not be a good choice in July/August because the evening sun beats down on the side where the awning is, but in May when it’s 62 degrees, the sun is perfect!

After dinner, we went for a walk to explore the campground a bit. This place is huge! Turns out, it’s the largest in the Ohio State Park system; almost 600 campsites! And it’s mostly empty, which makes sense for a Wednesday in May. It’s a beautiful campground – so many mature trees and lots of shade, with lots of space between most of the campsites…something we didn’t experience at the campsites in MD and VA.

love how shady the campsites are!

During our walk, we found some VERY long-term campers…there’s a small cemetery in the middle of one section – apparently the graves of the family who owned this land when it was a farm, before they lost it during the Great Depression.

Long-term campers at East Harbor

We walked along the water at East Harbor – just beautiful, especially with the blue skies!

After a good night’s sleep, we had a productive day on Thursday – did lots of little tasks and projects in the RV (hanging things up, adding Velcro to curtains so they’ll do a better job of keeping light out at night, etc), plus a good cleaning! And then another walk through a different area of the campground…a gorgeous day with bright sun, blue skies, and temperatures in the low 60s. Plus, of course, some R&R.

After dinner, Mark and I put his newest woodworking project to use and played a couple of games of cornhole. He customized the size slightly so that it would fit in one of our basement storage compartments…but had not actually measured before we took the RV to the dealer, so he took a guess as to the width…and he nailed it. As you can see, it fits with about a centimeter to spare on each side! It’s truly a beautiful piece – almost too nice to use outdoors! Anyway, we had fun and each won a match (although I must say, I won the match that we played to 21; he won the one that we played to 10! I’m not competitive, really…). Then it was time for a campfire and s’mores. Yum!

This morning we will pack up and head out; next stop, Toledo, where we will meet up with Connor. He finished his exams yesterday and Junior year is done. We’ll leave his car there and head west to the Chicago suburbs to visit family! Can’t wait to see everyone and spend some fun family time! Long overdue, but finally safe with vaccines!
